The Smith Lives On!!!

“Love, and do what you like.” -St. Augustine

Despite today being a Sunday, one of the hardest days for job hunting, this has been a good day. I went out to the YMCA to go exercise and ran into some really nice people. I met a really nice baker in the lane next to me while doing laps as well as some nice people that showed me a few methods for swimming better. My focus was to try to increase my lung capacity by trying to hold my breath underwater for longer periods of time. My top time for holding my breath is 56 seconds so far. I didn’t do many laps today, but when I timed myself I found that at top speed I can get a lap done in a minute and 24 seconds. I also tried using flippers for the first time today, which was kind of fun, but forgot to time myself when wearing them.

Now the title of this entry is a bit confusing unless you know how huge of an Elliott Smith fan I am. I have almost every album of his, both of his biographies, and I try to figure out his songs by ear on the piano. Luckily for me, I don’t have to anymore because someone is writing a song book of a lot of Elliott’s work. I am extremely excited because I love this guy’s work. The guy himself was an interesting character too, but probably not someone that was too easy to get along with for an extended period of time, as dictated by his biographies. The fun doesn’t stop at the song book though. I also found out that Guitar Hero 5 is slated to contain an Elliott Smith song, most likely off of his Figure 8 album. If I had to guess it would either be the song “Son of Sam” or “L.A.” since they tend to be the most rocking songs on that album, also “Son of Sam” was the only song off that album to get a music video.

I have been flipping between The Zombie Survival Guide and A Portrait of Dorian Gray. I am almost done with the former, but the latter is starting to interest me a lot. It is interesting how we have such classics as A Portrait of Dorian Gray that people know the general concept to and yet nobody knows the actual story. I have seen movies based off of the novel and even that one movie that has a character based off of him, yet the movies always portray the character differently than the book does so far. It is amazing how movies always seem to destroy a good story by adding the concept of love or the super-happy-ending to the story. Perhaps I am a realist, but I think that love for an idea is sometimes stronger than love for a person. It would be nice to see that as part of a storyline again in movies.
